Wandsworth Green Party selected Esther Obiri-Darko to represent them in the up-coming Tooting Parliamentary By-election on 16th June 2016. This represents the third time Esther has been selected for her local area and highlights the confidence the party has in her; her tireless campaigning has seen growing support at the polls in a field likely to feature new faces.
Esther has been proactive in the local community: helping to fight closure of women’s services at St. George’s Hospital (http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/feb/06/protesters-march-in-support-of-london-fgm-clinic), supporting the junior doctors in their dispute for safe contracts and campaigning for action on the problem of air quality and pollution in the borough. As a tenant herself, she’s passionate about protecting the rights of tenants; ensuring housing is offered for people not profit.
Esther was the Green Party London Assembly candidate for the Borough of Wandsworth and Merton in the Mayoral election last month, coming third and increasing the party’s share of the vote to 7.92% (from 7.5% in 2012). She also stood as the Green Party candidate for Tooting in the 2015 General Election when she came a creditable third ahead of both the Liberal Democrats and UKIP, more than trebling the party’s share of the vote (4.1% in 2015, 1.2% in 2010).
